Witness helps police make arrests in carjacking

Published

Fairfax County police said they arrested two carjacking suspects after an alert citizen provided patrol officers with a description of the armed robbers. Around 2 a.m. Sunday, three men in a Nissan Altima forced another car to pull over, jumped out with baseball bats, and ordered the driver and his wife out of the car. One culprit hopped in the victims’ car but crashed and fled. The other culprits sped off in the Altima. An observant witness relayed a description of the carjackers, and police quickly stopped the Altima. Police charged Rene Alvarenga, 19, of Alexandria, and a 15-year-old with carjacking and robbery. The third suspect remains at large.
