On this day, Aug. 19, in 1993, Wichita, Kan., physician George Tiller was shot and wounded outside an abortion clinic by Shelley Shannon.

Tiller, one of a handful of doctors who performed late-term abortions, would eventually be assassinated in 2009 by anti-abortion activist Scott Roeder.

Shannon was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 11 years and an additional 20 years for fire and acid attacks at nine other clinics.

She was visited in prison by Roeder.

On May 31, 2009, Roeder fatally shot Tiller through the eye as the doctor served as an usher during a church service.

From behind bars, Shannon praised Roeder’s actions.

Tiller “needed to be killed for the sake of justice,” Shannon wrote. “Whatever happens in the Kansas courtroom, justice was done on May 31 …”

Roeder was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
