Two people were killed early Wednesday morning in a shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas, Texas, according to the federal agency.
“The preliminary investigation determined that a suspect opened fire at a government building from an adjacent building,” the department said in a statement. Police responded to the scene around 6:40 a.m.
“Two people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. One victim died at the scene. The suspect is deceased.”
The victims were shot as agents were transferring them into the facility. They were shot while inside a law enforcement van, according to Fox News.
ICE confirmed one detainee was killed after previously saying two detainees had died. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons did not disclose their names. No ICE agents were shot or killed.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also confirmed that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found as officers approached him on the roof. The motive remains unclear.
“While we don’t know [the] motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop,” Noem said. “Please pray for the victims and their families.”
