Judge refuses to toss sentence for ID theft

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A federal judge has refused to throw out a Richmond woman’s 14-year prison sentence for helping illegal aliens obtain driver’s licenses and other identification.

In a four-paragraph opinion Thursday, U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson rejected Cynthia Salamanca’s claim that her sentence is unconstitutional. Salamanca cited a 2013 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that any fact that increases a mandatory minimum sentence must be considered by a jury.
