The armed suspect arrested at President Donald Trump’s California golf club on Sunday had posted bail in an ongoing case from last year, officials said Wednesday morning.
Jeanine John Taele was detained on gun and robbery charges in Los Angeles in 2025 and granted $250,000 bail, according to statements from the Justice Department and FBI that did not elaborate on the case. He now faces federal charges after local sheriff’s deputies allegedly caught him snooping around Trump National Golf Club with weaponry ahead of the president’s Tuesday visit for a Republican National Committee dinner.

“Mr. Taele’s troubling behavior at the President’s public golf course — merely days before the President was expected to arrive — raised serious red flags for law enforcement and led to the discovery of an unregistered firearm, a loaded weapon, as well as additional items of concern,” FBI Assistant Director in Charge Patrick Grandy said in a statement. “There is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump’s life, and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, working with our partners at the U.S. Secret Service, the ATF, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, will investigate this case thoroughly.”
Court records do not yet list Taele’s federal case or an attorney. He is expected to make his first appearance in federal court on Wednesday on a felony charge of possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle while also facing local charges stemming from the Sunday arrest.

Officials “are still investigating this individual’s motives,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said. Officers approached Taele after seeing him filming and photographing “security-planning activities” related to Trump’s event, according to Essayli. A later search at Taele’s residence found more guns, ammunition, body armor, and a notebook, according to the FBI.
The arrest came four months after a gunman was arrested at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington for allegedly trying to kill the president and his officials in attendance. Trump has endured a volley of violent threats and assassination attempts unparalleled in U.S. presidential history since his 2016 campaign.
