More than 30 people were arrested this week because of a prostitution sting in the College Park area, police said.

During the operation, fake advertisements were placed on websites where people meet to exchange money for sex. Female officers pretending to be prostitutes then engaged would-be johns over the phone, Prince George’s County police said.

Officers arrested 13 men for attempting to buy sex and six women for prostitution Wednesday. The arrests were made in five College Park-area hotels that were mentioned in the ads, police said.

Thursday, officers arrested an additional 11 men soliciting prostitutes and six women for prostitution. Both of these crimes are misdemeanors in Maryland.

“Prostitution is a gateway crime. It can lead to drugs, robberies and shootings,” Capt. Leigh Mints said in a news release. “We want to let everyone know this kind of activity is not something we want in this county and we’re doing all we can to prevent it.”
