A suspected bank robber has been nabbed after one of the bank tellers recognized him, and authorities say the suspect is responsible for four other bank jobs.
At around 1 p.m. Feb. 24, a man entered a branch of Wachovia Bank in Largo. Posing as a customer, the man donned a large black coat, a black winter hat covering his hair and glasses to cover his face. He passed a teller a note that said, “I want all 100’s and 50’s NOW!” The teller handed over about $2,250 to the robber.
A second teller who witnessed the robbery recognized the suspect as a man named Gregory Sylvester Taylor Jr., who had worked at the Giant Food store in Upper Marlboro last summer.
Two days after the robbery, the teller who had handed over the money was shown a six-man photo lineup, and identified Taylor as the man who robbed the bank. The second teller who had recognized Taylor also picked him out of a photo lineup.
Investigators are currently evaluating the handwriting on the robbery note against other writing samples of Taylor’s, but police say it appears that the handwriting came from the same source.
Taylor was arrested March 16 and charged with five bank robberies dating back to December 2009, including a SunTrust in Upper Marlboro and a Chevy Chase Bank in District Heights.
Taylor has served time for an earlier bank job. On June 16, 2000, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank robbery and was sentenced to 63 months in an Alexandria prison. Police say that the 2000 robbery bore similarities to the robbery on Feb. 24. Taylor had passed a demand note asking for “50’s and 100’s” and wore a winter hat and glasses.
