Police: 2 incidents targeting elderly victims possibly linked

D.C. police are seeking information about two possibly related burglaries targeting elderly victims in which the suspect pretended to be a maintenance worker.

In both incidents, the suspect knocked on the victims’ doors and said he was a maintenance worker who needed to fix a toilet that was leaking to the apartment below. After going to the victims’ bathrooms and surveying their toilets, the suspect assaulted the victims and stole personal property, police said.

One of the burglaries took place about 5:10 p.m. on June 19 in the 1400 block of Florida Avenue NE. The other occurred about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of G Street SE. Police have not definitively linked both cases but said that the incidents were possibly committed by the same person.

Police have released surveillance video in connection with the June 19 incident. A person of interest is seen in the video signing a book in the building’s front lobby.

The suspect in both incidents is described as a black male who is about 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-8. The suspect in the June 19 incident is also described as 40- to 45-years-old, 200 to 220 pounds, and last seen wearing a blue collared shirt with three-quarter-length sleeves, tan trousers and white tennis shoes.
