Facebook threats against police lead to arrest

A 43-year-old Manassas woman has been accused of posting threats to Prince William County police officers on Facebook, police said.

She was held without bail.

Crime drops 8 percent in Maryland

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley credited technology and increased cooperation among law enforcement for lowering the state’s crime by 8 percent and bringing violent crime to level not seen since 1975.

Homicides dropped by 12 percent over 2008 and robberies were down 9 percent, authorities said. But crime has fallen nationally, and the state is still one of the 10 most violent in the United States.

100 arrested in sweep

One hundred criminals were arrested during a five-day “Operation Joint Venture” last month, Alexandria police announced.

Aided by federal agents and other law enforcement officers, Alexandria police targeted the most serious offenders, including persons accused of robberies, felonious assaults, abduction, and other charges.

The highlight was the apprehension of Simon Bahta Asfeha, the double-homicide suspect wanted for murder in the deaths of his girlfriend Seble Tessema, 27, and their 3-year-old daughter. U.S. Marshals Service deputies working with the operation captured Asfeha with the help of the New York Police Department.

Hyattsville man faces 50 years

A Hyattsville man was convicted of killing a Landover man over the use of a car, Prince George’s County police said.

Jerome D. Proctor, 26, faces 50 years in prison for the shooting death of Sean E. Smith, 25, who was found on a neighborhood lawn on 70th Avenue in Landover Hills.

Police said Proctor fatally shot Smith in June 2009 after the two argued over Proctor’s unauthorized use of Smith’s car.
