Police are looking for suspects in a shooting near a Virginia university that killed the nephew of a Maryland congressman and injured another student.

Christopher Cummings, the nephew of Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings of Baltimore, was slain at his off-campus apartment at Old Dominion University in Norfolk on Friday. A housemate was critically injured.

Elijah Cummings said in a statement that his family was “in shock over the news of the random shooting.” He described his nephew as a junior studying criminal science who had a 3.5 grade-point average.

No arrests had been made in the case as of Monday evening.

Christopher Cummings was a “friendly and popular student” from Northern Virginia and a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, university President John Broderick wrote on the school’s website.
