Two men were shot and killed outside a commuter bus depot in Woodbridge, Prince William County police said.

The shooting set off a wide-reaching search for the shooter that continued into the night Monday, 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn said. As of Monday evening police had not issued an arrest warrant nor released the suspect’s name.

The two men were gunned down shortly before 11 a.m. Monday in a parking lot for employees at the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission bus terminal, about a mile from the Potomac Mills outlet mall, police said. One man was found near the terminal, another in a wooded area closer to Interstate 95, Chinn said. Security at the mall was stepped up Monday, officials said.

A dark blue sport utility vehicle riddled with bullet holes was also found on Telegraph Road. Police said it was not immediately clear whether it was a victim or the shooter who had been driving the SUV when it was sprayed with gunfire.

Police said the shooting may have stemmed from an earlier argument, and it’s likely the shooter knew at least one of the victims.

PRTC spokeswoman Christine Rodrigo said the bus company wouldn’t likely tighten security beyond the one security guard who patrols the property because the shooting appeared to be “targeted.”

The suspect is a black male with a light complexion in his 30s, police said. He is about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs about 210 pounds. He is considered to be armed and dangerous, police said.

The victims’ names were not released pending notification of their families, authorities said. One of the victims was a bus driver for First Transit, the company that contracts with PRTC to provide drivers, Rodrigo said .

That station was locked down for several hours Monday as police investigated, and buses could not start their regular routes on time, Rodrigo said.

To get commuters from their offices inside the Beltway back to their cars in Prince William, PRTC hired buses from other transit companies to pick up commuters at the end of Metro lines in Virginia, she said. It’s expected that bus service will return to normal today, but commuters should check prtctransit.org before leaving home.
