Two people were killed in Chevy Chase early this morning after a vehicle that police were following crashed, police said.

About 1:15 a.m., a police officer saw a Toyota Echo, ran its plates and discovered it was stolen. The officer called for backup, and police tried to pull the vehicle over in the 7400 block of Connecticut Avenue, but the vehicle didn’t stop, Montgomery County Police spokeswoman Officer Rebecca Innocenti said.

The vehicle was entering Chevy Chase Circle near the District line when it struck a tree. Officers saw flames and tried to control the fire. After officers rescued the driver and front-seat passenger, the car became completely engulfed by the fire, police said.

Two backseat passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and the passenger, 18-year-old Reeco Richardson of Northeast D.C., was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
