Loudoun County elementary school principal killed while crossing street

A Loudoun County elementary school principal was killed this week when she was struck by a sport-utility vehicle, according to authorities.

Sterling resident Kathleen Hwang, 60, was crossing Whitewater Drive on Wednesday near the intersection of Levee Way when she was hit by the vehicle, driven by an 18-year-old male, at about 3:15 p.m. A preliminary investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office found that Hwang was not using the crosswalk while in the street, according to spokeswoman Liz Mills.

Hwang didn’t see the Durango coming around a curve before she stepped out into the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office. No charges are pending against the driver of the SVU.

Counselors will be available when students return Monday to Sanders Corner Elementary School in Ashburn where Hwang had served as principal since 2005, according to Loudoun County school officials.

“This is a sad time in the life of this vibrant school, and we are grateful for the years of outstanding leadership given to Sanders Corner by Mrs. Hwang,” school officials said in a statement.
