A 5-month-old girl was fatally shot in the head Friday evening in Chicago‘s South Shore neighborhood, according to authorities. She is one of the youngest victims of gun violence in the Windy City.
The infant, identified as Cecilia Thomas, was sitting in the rear of a car when another vehicle pulled up and opened fire in the early evening, Chicago police said.
Thomas was taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead, per officials. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Thomas was shot in the head. Natalia Derevyanny, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, revealed Thomas would have turned 6 months old in four days, according to the Associated Press.

Chicago Violence Infant Slain
“I spoke with this mother. Yes, she’s very distraught,” said crisis responder Andrew Holmes, according to the report. “That’s a five month old baby. Nine months she carried that baby, nourished that baby. And it take a damn fool to discharge that weapon and take baby’s life.”
The suspect vehicle is possibly a red Chrysler, according to Holmes, per FOX 32.
