Actress Kirstie Alley opened up to Fox News host Tucker Carlson about the backlash she received after voicing her support for former President Donald Trump.
“People go, ‘You’re so brave.’ I go, ‘No, I think I’m stupid,’” Alley said of the time she first revealed she was considering voting for Trump. “Because honestly, it is a real situation. And it is a real blackballing situation. And it’s so strange to me because artists are free-thinkers for the most part.”
The actress said other producers voiced similar thoughts to her but kept them mostly to themselves for fear that they would “never work again,” a distress Alley believes was probably well-founded.
Alley said that in the past, she never viewed herself as a political person and pointed to a time in the 1980s when it seemed like differing political views were always welcome.
The actress also pointed out that many stars are able to get away with acts much more serious than who they vote for in an election yet are still able to find work in the industry.
“You can be cooking meth and sleeping with hookers, but as long as, apparently, you didn’t vote for Trump,” Alley said. “I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone a bit with the whole concept of it.”
Alley said her voice of support for Trump cost her a lot of followers and friends in the industry, making her completely rethink how she evaluated such friendships in the future.

“On Twitter I had many celebrities follow me, and now I think three follow me,” Alley said. “I’m the same person. I’m the girl who voted for Obama, twice. And I’m like, ‘Oh, so you liked me when I voted for Obama, and now you’re this?’ And it’s made me have to rethink, weirdly, my whole friendships, all my friendships.”
