Louisiana alligator shows up on South Texas beach

An alligator from Louisiana made an appearance at a Texas beach Monday.

Officials determined the “unusual visitor” made the journey from the Pelican State to Malaquite Beach by inspecting the notch on its tail and tags on its rear feet, Padre Island National Seashore said Tuesday on Facebook.

“After consulting with our partners at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the animal was transported to a rehabilitation facility to recover from its long journey,” the post added. “See ya later, alligator!”

The distance from the Louisiana border to the beach where the alligator was found is around 300 miles. It is unclear how the reptile was able to travel such a long distance.

Alligators are rarely found in the ocean as they can only tolerate salt water for a few hours or days, according to the National Ocean Service.

Alligators are not a rare sighting in Texas at large. An alligator sanctuary on South Padre Island has rescued alligators from across the state.
