Majority of people say transgender athletes should play on teams that match their biological gender: Poll

A majority of people believe transgender athletes should play in leagues or on teams with people who match their biological gender, a national poll found.

Athletes should be participating with those who share their biological gender, said 62% of respondents in a Gallup poll released Wednesday, while 34% of participants said they should play on teams with players who match the gender with which they identify.

NEARLY THREE-FOURTHS OF REPUBLICANS SUPPORT TRANSGENDER SPORTS BAN: POLL

Eighty-six percent of Republican respondents said an athlete’s biological gender should be the determining factor, while only 10% of Republican respondents said it should be based on gender identity.

Democrats were more evenly split, with 55% saying gender identity should be the defining trait while 41% said it should be biological gender.

There have been about 50 bills introduced in about 30 state governments that would prevent transgender athletes from participating in sports using their preferred gender instead of their biological sex, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Conservatives argue that allowing transgender females to play against biological females would present them with an unfair advantage that would hurt biological females, while Democrats argue that excluding them would be isolating and discriminatory.

The poll surveyed 1,016 adults between May 3 and May 18 and has a margin of sampling error of 4 percentage points.
