7-year-old shot and killed in Chicago McDonald’s drive-thru and father in serious condition

A seven-year-old girl was with her father in a Chicago-area McDonald’s drive-thru when she was shot and killed on Sunday.

Police identified the victim as Jaslyn and her father as Jontae Adams, 28, who was also shot. Around 4:20 p.m. local time, two people got out of a gray vehicle and opened fire in Adams's direction, an anonymous McDonald's employee told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Jaslyn, one of four children, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the hospital. Her father was also taken to Stroger Hospital, and his condition was listed as serious.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related and think it’s connected to another Sunday shooting at a Popeyes drive-thru window. Both of the victims, a 33-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were shot. The man is listed in serious condition and the woman is critical.

Jaslyn’s aunt, Tawny McMullen, described her niece as a “beautiful” and “really sweet child.”

“Put the guns down,” McMullen pleaded as tears streamed down her face. “Our kids want to play, my kids can’t even go out the door because of [the violence.] Please put the guns down, please. My 8-year-old baby says she don’t even want to go outside to play because she’s scared she’s going to get shot. This has gotta stop.”

Jaslyn was one of five people who lost their lives as a result of gun violence in Chicago over the weekend, while 22 more were wounded, according to the Chicago-Sun Times.
