Vance, who was first elected to the Senate in 2022, resigned from his seat last week, ahead of his swearing-in as the 50th vice president at Monday’s inauguration. As vice president, Vance will be the president of the Senate and will cast tiebreaking votes in the event of a 50-50 tie.
The person DeWine selects to fill Vance’s seat will have to run in a special election in 2026 and a regular general election in 2028 to hold the spot in the Senate.
