Talladega offers free laps around track to those who get tested or vaccinated for COVID-19

Talladega Superspeedway will be offering free laps around its track for those who decide to get tested or vaccinated at its facility.

Drivers will use their personal vehicles and will be allowed to drive at highway speeds behind a pace truck. The Alabama racetrack announced the Saturday event on Friday in partnership with the state’s Department of Public Health and other agencies.

“Fans that come out tomorrow, if they’re either tested or get the vaccination, they’ll be able to take two laps around the Talladega Superspeedway, the world’s biggest, baddest, and fastest track,” Brian Crichton, the track’s president, told CNN on Friday, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The drivers must be licensed and at least 19 years old. Family and friends can also be in the car, but they must be tested or vaccinated.

After taking two laps around the track, participants will be directed to an area where they will either receive a dose of the Pfizer vaccine or get tested.

Motorcycles, tractor-trailers, and recreational vehicles will not be allowed to participate. Preregistration will not be necessary.

The organization received a lot of interest from younger men for the event, which was the target demographic, said Mark Johnson, assistant district administrator for the Alabama Department of Health.

Alabama has administered more than 2.7 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, with over 1.3 million people fully vaccinated out of a population of 4.9 million. The state has recorded over 530,000 cases of the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.
