The Confederate flag is once again flying over South Carolina, raised by the Democratic National Committee to slap Republican front-runner Donald Trump’s supporters for wishing the South had won the Civil War.
The flag, inflammatory to many Democrats who see it as a sign of racism, is cited in a new fundraising email on the eve of the GOP primary in the state, which decided last summer to stop flying it on capitol grounds.

The email from the Democratic National Committee “War Room” cites polling that Trump’s supporters are angry with the state’s decision to pull down the flag, and who wish the Confederacy had won the fight which southerners commonly call the “War of Northern Aggression.”

The DNC mocks, “Donald Trump is in the lead (sigh),” then uses polling to show what else his backers support:
— 70 percent think the Confederate flag should still be flying over the state’s capitol.
— 38 percent wish the South had won the Civil War.

— 62 percent support a national database of Muslims in the United States.

It concludes, “If Donald Trump wins on Saturday, the message will be clear — these are the values of the GOP.”
