Top Republican: ‘Amnesty No. 1, No. 2, No. 3’ if Dems take Congress

Democrats will push for granting amnesty to illegal immigrants immediately if they take control of the Congress in the midterm elections, according to a top House GOP chairman.

Texas Rep. Lamar Smith said that Democrats would move on amnesty for the millions of illegals in the United States in hopes they would vote for the party in the future.

At an event sponsored by the Center for Immigration Studies, he also said that the party would open the borders for the same reason.

“I think that they realize that if they achieve their goals, which is to increase immigration and give amnesty to any immigrant, that it’s very likely that those folks are going to be Democrats in the future, and that is going to bolster that party,” said Smith, who is retiring this year.

While sounding confident that the Republicans will retain a tiny majority after the fall elections, Smith said however that a Democratic win would immediately result in pro-amnesty votes.

“It will be amnesty number one, number two, number three,” he warned.

Democrats have argued for granting amnesty to some 800,000 illegal immigrants considered “dreamers.” They came in under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

Several liberals have also called for the elimination of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a branch of which handles deportation. But Smith, citing polls of wide public support, predicted that Democrats will not move against ICE.

“I don’t think that they are that irrational,” he said.
