In the latest national election matchup, Republican Donald Trump nearly ties Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and wins the backing of most supporters of rival Sen. Ted Cruz.

The NBC News/Survey Monkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll released tuesday morning has Clinton besting Trump 38 percent to 36 percent, with 16 percent preferring a third party candidate and 8 percent sitting at home.

That is a better matchup for the GOP than Cruz-Clinton. In that contest, Clinton beats Cruz 37 percent to 32 percent.

The poll also looked into whether supporters of the GOP leaders would vote for the eventual nominee and found that a majority would.

Some 56 percent of Cruz voters would vote for Trump, and 53 percent of Trump voters would back Cruz.
