FEC Dem cheers court support for Obama internet regs

An influential Federal Election Commission Democrat who has eyed regulations on conservative internet sites like the Drudge Report tweeted cheers for a Monday court decision supporting the administration-backed net neutrality rules for the internet.

Ann Ravel, who met with President Obama this year, has pulled back from publicly pushing FEC regulations on conservative media. But her retweet of a California lawmaker’s support for the court ruling this week is renewing concerns of a new push inside the national elections office.

“Given Ravel’s past history with internet regulation at the FEC, I’m not sure I would have gone out and cheered on another agency’s internet takeover,” said a critic.

She retweeted a tweet from Rep. Zoe Lofgren who wrote, “Good news – today’s circuit court #NetNeutrality ruling means Americans will maintain access to a free and open internet.”

A federal appeals court Tuesday upheld an Obama-backed effort to block broadband providers from interfering with internet traffic. Republicans and cable companies have blasted the effort as internet regulation, and the first step in more rules to come.
