President Obama on Wednesday sent a request to Congress asking to authorize the use of military force against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The AUMF would last three years and require the president to ask for reauthorization when it expires.
The Senate on Thursday easily confirmed Ashton Carter to be the new secretary of defense with a vote of 93-5. He will replace outgoing secretary, Chuck Hagel.
