“We will also continue to support vulnerable refugee populations, such as women, children, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTQI+) persons, and persons with disabilities,” he said Monday in a statement.
Biden was pushed by Democrats last year to keep a campaign promise to raise the country’s refugee cap to 125,000 in fiscal year 2022. He touted that decision Monday and vowed that his administration would invest in its refugee admissions program to improve wait times and ease the resettlement process as the United Nations Refugee Agency reports that 100 million-plus people have been forcibly displaced amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
“We have already demonstrated, by welcoming more than 80,000 Afghans to our country over the past year, and by committing to provide temporary safe haven to tens of thousands of Ukrainians, that we will lead by example,” he said.
He added, “We do this because it’s the right thing to do, but helping refugees is also good foreign policy, contributing to making the world more stable and secure, which benefits us all.”

Biden additionally alluded to the political pressure he is under to respond to problems at the southern border after 239,416 migrants were caught trying to enter the country illegally from Mexico in May alone, the fourth consecutive monthly rise.
“We also recommit to engaging in diplomatic efforts to address the root causes of displacement and bring an end to the ongoing conflicts that drive refugees to seek safety across borders,” he said.
