Macron giving Harris a model of the European heavy-lift space launch vehicle comes after the pair toured NASA’s headquarters this week after he arrived in Washington, D.C.

Macron gifted President Joe Biden with vinyl and CD copies of the original soundtrack for Claude Lelouch’s 1966 film Un homme et une femme, which the president and first lady Jill Biden saw on their first date. In addition to a Saint James sweater and an LIP watch, Macron also gave Joe Biden a 2012 Christofle cup to honor Christofle’s Atlantic crossing aboard the SS Normandie ocean liner. Jill Biden was presented with copies of Gustave Flaubert’s book Madame Bovary and Albert Camus’s The Plague, The Fall, Exile and the Kingdom, and Selected Essays.
In turn, the Bidens gifted Macron with an American-made mirror fashioned from fallen wood collected on the White House grounds, a replica of a mirror that hangs in the West Wing.
“President Biden also gifted President Macron a custom vinyl record collection of great American musicians and an archival facsimile print of Thomas Edison’s 1877 Patent of the American Phonograph,” the White House said. “Dr. Biden gifted Mrs. [Brigitte] Macron a gold and emerald pendant necklace designed by a French-American designer.”

Harris and Macron’s meeting at NASA was convened to discuss extant collaborations in space science and space exploration, as well as using data collected from space to combat climate change one year after they spoke about the issues in Paris.
“I believe space remains a place of undiscovered and unrealized opportunities,” Harris said. “For that reason, there’s so much potential in terms of the work that nations can do there. And in particular, when we work together, based on shared principles and values, to seize these opportunities.”

“Space is the new place of conflict,” Macron added in English. “We have crazy players in this space as well, and we have rogue states, and we have new hybrid attacks. And I think it’s very important together because we do share this history. We do have the same commitment and attachment to science and progress that we do share, as well as democratic values, and I think building these new rules and setting them together is, for us, very important.”
