“When all else fails, there’s always delusion,” comedian Conan O’Brien once said.
It’s the perfect summary of a recent op-ed by Lanny Davis, former adviser to President Bill Clinton, claiming that Democrats aren’t soft on crime and that Republicans making such claims are lying.
In trying to justify his absurd position, Davis referenced the 1970 midterm elections — as if that has remotely anything to do with contemporary society or politics.

“It’s not too late for the Democrats running for the Senate and House to do what Sen. Ed Muskie (D-Maine) did for Democratic congressional candidates on the evening of the 1970 midterms: to tell the American people that the Republicans’ message that the Democrats are soft on crime is a lie,” Davis wrote. “And they know it.”
Except that the Republicans’ messaging on crime is absolutely true in 2022. Liberal, Democratic, and left-wing politicians have repeatedly openly supported releasing hardened, remorseless, career criminals from jail and into the public — even violent ones. They have been doing so so under the banner of criminal justice reform and combating alleged systemic racism. “Woke” congressional representatives and district attorneys throughout the country embraced these ideologies. Republicans aren’t lying; Democrats don’t want to be held accountable for their horrible policies. As a result, they try to deflect from the real issues.
Consider Davis’s own delusional words.
“Now in 2022, it is strange, inexplicable, that Democrats have allowed the Republicans to claim to be the anti-crime party and allowed to go unanswered the lie that Democrats are soft on crime,” Davis wrote. “Which party supports banning private purchase of weapons of war and extensive background checks, positions favored by 70-80 percent of the American people? Democrats.”
This is, of course, a logical fallacy. Whether this is true or not, it’s irrelevant to today’s crime issues. The overwhelming majority of the crime committed today has nothing to do with background checks or any other left-wing gun control rhetoric. These crimes would still be happening even if every single one of their fantasy gun control laws were implemented. The surge in crime has to do with left-wing criminal justice reforms that don’t hold criminals accountable.
How many murderers are repeat offenders? How many were previously charged with murder or other violent crimes but inexplicably given reduced bail by a judge from a Democratic-controlled city? All the background checks in the world aren’t going to do a thing when Democrats keep on putting the bad guys on the street.

Democrat politicians are directly responsible for the surge in crime in 2022. They prioritized protecting criminals instead of innocent people. If not for their woke, social justice, left-wing reforms, the country would be safer. For anyone on the Left to argue otherwise is a bald-faced lie. And, as Davis so eloquently said, “they know it.”
