CLEVELAND — Since Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in early 2011 and the Senate in 2015, there’s only been one thing standing in the way of their agenda: President Obama and his veto pen.
Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California outlined the agenda House Republicans would pursue if Americans finally remove the last thing standing in their way and elect a Republican, Donald Trump, to the White House.
“In our Republican agenda, our enemies will fear us,” McCarthy said. “Our taxes will be fairer. People will be able to afford the healthcare they want. The people’s voice will be heard. Government will help those who truly need it and allow everyone to rise.”
McCarthy also touched on improving a struggling Department of Veterans Affairs. “As a matter of principle, you will have the very best America has to offer,” McCarthy told men and women in uniform. “Those who fought on the front lines should never have to wait in line. There is a better way.”
McCarthy also focused on a themes of innovation and disrupting the status quo, terms often used to invoke Uber and other aspects of the sharing economy. “This Republican agenda can only be realized if we disrupt the status quo. And let’s face it — Hillary Clinton is the definition of the status quo,” McCarthy said. “When innovation has brought more power to the people, Democrats want more power for Washington. When innovation advances technology, Hillary Clinton uses them to put American secrets at risk.”
