Leahy’s Nazi abortion story at Gorsuch’s confirmation hearing

For those who had feared that Citizens United had completely supplanted Roe v. Wade as the focus of all debate in Supreme Court nominations, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., reverted to the more traditional issue this morning.

He discussed a case in which he, as a state’s attorney in Vermont, prosecuted an abortionist who had been trained at Auschwitz, the massive death camp established by the Third Reich to kill Jews and other people considered undesirable by Hitler’s regime.

The defendant in this case, a woman, had been trained to perform abortions so that SS officers at the Nazi death camp could have their way with the women imprisoned there before sending them to the gas chamber.

I’m not sure what Leahy intended to get at with this story, but it was a sobering reminder of how abortion can be and sometimes is used to facilitate sexual exploitation.
