New ad: Roy Moore has never been caught before, so how could he be guilty now?

Roy Moore has never been caught before, so how could Roy Moore be guilty now? That’s the logic behind the latest campaign ad released by the Alabama Senate hopeful.

“Five state campaigns. Forty years of honorable service. Roy Moore has been intensely scrutinized. And not a hint of scandal,” an enthusiastic radio voice booms as patriotic images of Moore, American flags, and the U.S. Military flash over the screen. “But, four weeks before the election. False allegations – a scheme by liberal elites and the Republican establishment to protect their big government trough.”

Damage control ahead of the Dec. 12 special election, the 30-second clip follows a well-worn script: Blame the media and blame the vast bipartisan conspiracy for trumping up new charges about old events. It’s not clear whether that will work.

Polling since allegations broke that Moore dallied and undressed underage teenagers has shown the Republican slipping. The RealClearPolitics average has Democrat challenger, Doug Jones, ahead by a point—a significant swing since early November when Moore led by as many as 10 points.

But what the ad lacks in logic, it makes up for in raw appeals to emotion. Northern voices, like the Washington Post, have been so demonized in the Southern state that it’s easier to dismiss the reporter and ignore the reports.
