Democrats should apologize to Donald Trump, and Trump should apologize to Robert Mueller

Over the past two years, many senior Democrats have accused President Trump of effectively committing treason with Russia. Those Democrats should now apologize to Trump, because Special Counsel Robert Mueller has concluded there is no evidence to support the conclusion that Trump or his associates engaged in a conspiracy with Russia. Democrats have thus also been proved to lack the justification to make those claims.

Yet, considering that Trump hurled dozens of personal insults at the man who has now nearly judged him as innocent, the president should also apologize to Mueller. Think about tweets such as this one from last November.

Just as with Democratic accusations against Trump, that kind of Trump attack was unjust to Mueller. The basic outline of Mueller’s report suggests that his investigation involved a careful collection and assessment of the facts. It was thus in the finest tradition of American justice. Belittling the lifelong public servant — a former Marine infantry officer and combat veteran — for doing his job, Trump offered only personal enmity in contrast to what Mueller offered him: fair judgment applied to the question of reasonable doubt.

Yes, Mueller’s careful language on the question of obstruction of justice means that the fires of partisanship will continue to burn strongly. And yes, Democrats have a legitimate constitutional and political interest in assessing the details of Mueller’s findings. But, apologies would do the nation good here on what must be considered a good day. Perhaps those apologies might even offer us a chance for a kinder national discourse!
