Bright Bulb: Showing up for history

About 35,000 people turned out in bitterly cold weather to see President-elect Barack Obama speak in Baltimore Saturday. At a time when the state and the country face seemingly insurmountable problems, thousands showed — and millions more will show today around the country — their support for the new president. If all of us apply the same enthusiasm to reviving respect for the things that made this country and this state great –hard work, a small and transparent government, and respect for the law — we will come out of this crisis stronger.

Outrage: Losing our grip on guns
WHO: Howard County police

WHAT: Howard police have been storing guns in their cars overnight in locked racks.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: The locked racks clearly aren’t very effective. Two police-issued firearms (with ammunition) were stolen from radio cars parked overnight in Elkridge. Police officers should know how easy it is to steal from parked cars — and find a more secure location for the guns.

Quote of the Day
“As we come together as a state and a nation to celebrate this historic occasion, I want to remind Marylanders to be safe as we celebrate inauguration festivities across the state.”

– Gov. Martin O’Malley, upon signing legislation to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in Anne Arundel County for an hour past closing time on Inauguration Day.
