President Trump’s private phone call in July with the Ukrainian president may be a massive election-year scandal for the White House.
Then again, it could also be another media-hyped dud. It wouldn’t be the first.

The story is pretty confusing and there are a lot of moving parts. Whatever you do though, don’t rely on MSNBC’s Ali Velshi to keep you well-informed.
“President Trump has repeatedly suggested, without evidence, that Joe Biden used his VP position to pressure Ukraine to fire the country’s top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin [emphasis added],” the MSNBC news anchor said Monday afternoon.
That is all true except for the part where Biden is on tape bragging about doing exactly that.
“I said, ‘I’m telling you, you’re not getting $1 billion,’” Biden recalled in 2018 during an event sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations.
He was speaking specifically of his efforts as vice president to pressure the Ukrainian government into firing the notoriously corrupt Shokin, who at the time was toying with the idea of prosecuting an energy company with financial ties to Biden’s son, Hunter.
“I said: ‘We’re leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor’s not fired, you’re not getting the money,’” Biden added. “Well, son of a bitch, he got fired.”
These remarks from last year, by the way, are on tape.
The Ukraine scandal is summed up nicely by the Washington Examiner’s John Gage:
Whether the Bidens or Trump are guilty of any criminal wrongdoing remains to be seen. The Washington Examiner’s editorial today summed it up nicely: “This may be a massive Trump scandal. It also may be a scandal about the Biden family. Maybe it’s a minor issue. Maybe it’s nothing.”
One of the things we do know, however, is that Biden himself has bragged on-the-record about using his position as vice president to get Shokin canned. Velshi, who anchors a news program, not a commentary show, couldn’t get even that detail right Monday afternoon.
Wow! An MSNBC anchor bungling basic facts of a story in such a way as to benefit Democrats? Now I really have seen everything.
