Utah spends its education dollars most efficiently, scoring 86 points on the Nation’s Report Card for every $1,000 spent on education. Despite spending only $6,441 per pupil, less than any other state, Utah’s combined reading and math score on the Nation’s Report Card beats 20 other states.

Nationwide, math and reading points per every $1,000 spent on education range from 28 in New York to 86 in Utah. The District of Columbia performs even worse than New York, earning only 26 points per $1,000 spent. The District of Columbia spends $19,847 per pupil, more than any state, and gets the lowest combined math and reading score, 513 points, on the Nation’s Report Card. Meanwhile, New York spends $19,396 per pupil, the most of any state.
