Standing outside the building that produced two of the greatest documents about liberty and freedom in the history of civilization, President Joe Biden authoritatively condemned approximately half of the country’s voters who disagree with him. Constitutional liberties apparently mean nothing to the self-proclaimed “great unifier,” as Biden chastised all those who dare speak out against him. It was pure demagoguery meant to distract from the disastrous first 20 months of the Biden administration. He warned of “an attempt to nullify the votes of 81 million people” by vilifying 74 million others as an imminent threat. It was one of the darkest presidential moments in our nation’s history.
“Too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal,” Biden said in his ominous and divisive speech. “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”
Using our nation’s colonial roots was a cheap political stunt. The only thing missing from the colonial backdrop of last night’s political theater was Biden doing a reenactment in Philadelphia of Paul Revere’s famous horse ride through Boston, warning, “The MAGAs are coming! The MAGAs are coming!”
But what really isn’t normal is an American president denigrating over 70 million people. Biden’s inflammatory rhetoric is nothing new. Even the mass hysteria with which he disparaged his Republican opponents is par for Biden’s course. But falsely labeling his political opponents as an imminent threat while portraying himself as the virtuous and compassionate hero is a despicable new low.
Since Biden’s been in office, the country’s been plagued with rampant violent crime and record-high gas prices. But, with the 2022 midterm elections just around the corner, rather than take responsibility for these failures, Biden ignored the legitimate issues, opting to focus instead on the political bogeyman of the Left: former President Donald Trump and his supporters, the villainous “MAGA” Republicans.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt famously said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself,” upon facing the Empire of Japan and actual Nazis and fascists. Compare that to the hateful and divisive rhetoric of the current president of the United States. While FDR stood firm in the face of adversity, Biden cowered in fear for political points, essentially whining, “We must fear nothing but MAGA and Trump himself.”
Such despotic demagoguery should not be tolerated. But, with a 38% approval rating, Biden knows he has no leg to stand on when discussing any political accomplishments. Other than bribing voters with student loan forgiveness, people are worse off under Biden than his predecessor.
People can dislike the former president and his supporters. But the fact is, there is no imminent threat to our democracy from Trump or his acolytes. There is nothing to fear from MAGA or Trump supporters. Sure, they are angry — but so, too, were the Democrats who voted against Trump when he won in 2016.
And in terms of political violence, yes, unquestionably, the Capitol riot was terrible. But let’s not forget the violence and destruction by those on the Left during President Trump’s inauguration. Let’s not ignore that Trump supporters were attacked in the streets, inauguration attendees were blocked from entering the ceremony, and those going to inaugural festivities were harassed or assaulted. Let’s not gloss over the fact that in January 2017, police foiled the plan of a 34-year-old left-winger who sought to orchestrate an acid attack at a Trump inaugural ball.
And this violence continued throughout Trump’s term, including congressional Democrats urging people to harass Trump supporters and Cabinet members.
Furthermore, must we forget the yearlong string of left-wing violence that occurred in 2020? When discussing political violence, why didn’t Biden mention the murders, riots, and looting that ripped the country apart — instigated by Democratic politicians and openly embraced by the mainstream media? These are rhetorical questions, of course. We know why he didn’t. So spare me the fake outrage.
The truth is Biden sounded, and looked, like every totalitarian figure from the 20th century who falsely warned of the dangers of political rivals and opponents. And just like those despotic tyrants, on Thursday, Biden weaponized fear to consolidate political support — and distract from his shortcomings as a leader.
Never has the “buck stopped” with Biden, and he’s always needed a scapegoat for his disasters. First, it was Putin; now, it’s MAGA Republicans. But, in reality, the only legitimate threat to the “foundations of our republic” is the failed policies and incessant disinformation emanating from the Biden White House.
