As much as I enjoy Politico’s Morning Score emails, I have to take issue with this one:
SCORE INTERVIEW – Republicans eyeing Albuquerque mayor for Senate or governor bid: New Mexico isn’t a top target for Republicans in 2018, but there’s one candidate some GOP operatives believe could beat Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich. Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry, a Republican, has won two terms in the state’s heavily Democratic capital – the second one with 69 percent of the vote. He’s done so with a decidedly moderate record, including embracing policies that fit better with technocrats than Tea Party hardliners.
Albuquerque, the famous site where Bugs Bunny always takes a wrong turn, is not the capital of New Mexico. But it’s true that Republicans really would like to put one of New Mexico’s Senate races into play this time around — something they haven’t managed to do since former Sen. Pete Domenici, R, was last re-elected in 2002.
