Fine, you can place Iran on a map. But how about Moldova? Kiribati?

Most Americans can’t find Iran on a map. That’s not surprising (though I suspect the one person who thought Iran was in South Carolina is really just a troll). But it got me thinking: How many countries could I place on a map?

The answer this afternoon: 189 out of 197.

Sporcle is a time-wasting website that includes lots of online map quizzes. One of them names a country and asks you to click on it. Now, I once took a couple of days to memorize the world map, so I’m pretty good. But the Pacific and Caribbean islands are pretty tough. Also, I confused Zambia and Zimbabwe, plus Bahrain with Qatar. My result was 96%.

They give you 20 minutes. I took just about 16 minutes.

Take the quiz and tweet me your results: @tpcarney. The average is 56%.

If any readers beat me their first try, I’ll trumpet their success in an update below.
