Hate crimes in California have doubled under Newsom

While Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is out complaining about racism and bigotry in other states, it turns out that hate crimes have surged in supposedly tolerant California during his tenure.

According to the Public Policy Institute of California, reported hate crimes (described as “crimes with reasonable evidence of motivation based on a victim’s race/ethnicity, gender, or other personal characteristics”) reached a low in 2014. The numbers had been slowly increasing since 2014, but they spiked in 2019, Newsom’s first term in office. Hate crimes in California have since doubled from 2019 to 2022, the duration of Newsom’s first term.
