In recent years, many Republicans have notably shifted their views on labor unions and free market economics more generally. Gone are the days of former Rep. Ron Paul’s influence on the party’s economics and former President Ronald Reagan’s union busting. Now Republicans favor protectionism, tariffs, and pandering to the same union bosses who oppose everything for which the GOP allegedly stands.
International Brotherhood of Teamsters boss Sean O’Brien, who previously endorsed both Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden for president, spoke at the Republican National Convention. “The Teamsters are not interested in whether you have an ‘R’ or a ‘D’ beside your name,” O’Brien said. “We want to know one thing: What are you doing to help American workers?”
