Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal took a swipe at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House John Boehner on Thursday, criticizing Congressional leadership for being too complacent on repealing Obamacare.
“If the whole point of this election was simply to give John Boehner and Mitch McConnell nicer offices, let’s give them back,” Jindal said. “What is the point of having a Republican Party if it’s only going to become a second liberal party? … Our candidates said they were going to repeal and replace Obamacare. That means all of it. That means you have to get rid of all the tax increases, you get rid of all the regulations, all the spending, all of it. And then you start anew and really truly do what Americans want, which is to drive down the cost of healthcare.”
Jindal has proposed a healthcare plan that would start fresh, returning taxes and spending to pre-Obamacare levels. But some Republican healthcare alternatives floating around Congress, while cheaper than Obamacare, would still represent higher taxes and spending than what was on the books before Obamacare passed.
Just prior to those comments, Jindal said, “My message to Republican leaders and … elected officials is first: do what you promised us you were going to do when you asked us to vote for you. Second, don’t become just cheaper Democrats. We don’t need a Democrat-lite.”
Jindal’s remarks were delivered at a lunch hosted by the American Principles Project.
