Republican Louisiana State Sen. Elbert Guillory in an ad this week savaged vulnerable incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., for living a life of luxury while many African-Americans in the Pelican State live in poverty.
“Mary Landrieu first ran for Senate in 1996 promising to be a champion for the black community,” Guillory says in the ad, which was released Tuesday by Free At Last PAC. “But 18 years later, little has changed.”
“Our communities are poorer than they were in 1996. Our schools continue to fail children,” he said. “And our jails are filled with young black men who should be at home being fathers.”
The Republican state senator added: “Meanwhile Mary Landrieu lives in a $2 million mansion on Capitol Hill.”
Free at Last PAC, of which Guillory is an honorary chairman, supports African-American Republicans running for office.
“While you scrounge together food stamps to buy Kool-Aid, she sips champagne at cocktail parties. While you dig through the couch looking for gas money, she flies around in private jets funded by taxpayer dollars,” he said in the video, addressing members of the African-American community.
“But Mary Landrieu knows that she doesn’t have to do anything for our community, because no matter what she does, 95 percent of us will line up and vote for her,” he added. “Every single time.”
Landrieu is struggling to fend off a tough election challenge from Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-La., trailing her Republican opponent 43.4 percent 48 percent, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average.
The Louisiana Senate race, which operates under an unusual jungle primary system, is one of several national elections that will decide which party controls Congress after the November midterm elections.
