After nearly a week of the largest demonstrations Ukraine has seen since the war with Russia began in February 2022, President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to his people. On Tuesday, he dismissed Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander in chief of the armed forces. Protest organizers had set a July 24 deadline for the president to remove Syrskyi and reinstate Mykhailo Fedorov as defense minister.

As I noted last week, this crisis represents a collision of different generations. Fedorov, the 35-year-old technocrat who built the country’s celebrated Diia digital state services, before taking on the defense portfolio, wanted to sweep aside the army’s old guard and promote a new generation of commanders fluent in new technologies. He collided head-on with Syrskyi, a 60-year-old student of Soviet military doctrine. Syrskyi is widely credited for his defense of Kyiv, the most critical battle of the war, which earned him the position of the chief of the General Staff.
