Don’t let China escape blame for the pandemic

With China finally falling under more scrutiny for its treatment of Uighur Muslims and the subjugation of Hong Kong, it’s important that the United States speaks with a unified voice. This applies to another grievance that seems to have fallen by the wayside — how China is responsible for the global coronavirus pandemic.

The latest offender is House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who called the coronavirus the “Trump virus.” Pelosi has justifiably slammed President Trump in the past for prioritizing a trade deal with China over their human rights issues, but she’s willing to use the coronavirus to hit Trump instead of focus on the real issue at hand.

For all of his faults on the issue of China, Trump has correctly and repeatedly laid the blame for the virus on the country. The Chinese Communist Party lied about the severity of the virus and allowed it to spread across the globe, with help from their propagandists in the World Health Organization. Dodging responsibility for the virus has been a propaganda push by the CCP, including suggesting that U.S. soldiers initially brought it to China.

In playing partisan politics on this issue, Pelosi is helping that propaganda push. The CCP would like nothing more than to put blame for the virus on anyone but themselves. Pelosi’s other attacks on Trump haven’t helped matters much either. She suggested Trump should have banned U.S. citizens in China from returning to the country in his travel ban, and she has called Trump’s attacks on China over the virus an “interesting diversion.”

There have been around 144,000 coronavirus deaths in the U.S. Overdose deaths are continuing to climb due to the shutdowns, while millions were thrown out of work and businesses have been forced to shut their doors for good. The blame for this lies primarily with the Chinese government and its enablers.

If any issue should be stripped of its partisan lens, it should be the threat of China. It’s not worth pedaling CCP propaganda to dunk on Trump or any other politicians, Republican or Democrat. Our political leaders need to be presenting a united front on each on this issue. Don’t let China get away with causing the pandemic.
