Impeachment, apparently it’s what women want.
A new joint poll by ABC News and the Washington Post shows that a shocking 57 percent of women surveyed support the idea of Congress initiating impeachment proceedings against President Trump. Men aren’t as certain, though: Only 40 percent want to tell Trump he’s fired.
This should be a red flag for the president, because while life is improving under his administration, his approval numbers are not. It won’t be enough for him in 2020 just to point to a booming economy. Trump can’t just repeat the line about female unemployment being at a 65-year low. Those are good things, but they aren’t enough.
[Trump: Democrats can’t impeach me because I’m doing a ‘great job’]
Whether or not this impeachment frenzy translates into political power remains to be seen. Pollsters surveyed 1,003 adults over the phone with clear partisan divisions of 33-25-37 for Democrats, Republicans, and independents, respectively. A national sampling, to be sure. A forecast for November, it is not because those surveyed weren’t likely voters.
It is also worth noting that Trump did very well with college-educated woman during the general election. Half of that demographic, 51 percent, went for Democrat Hillary Clinton but a significant 46 percent were with him. They weren’t that concerned with his character at the time, though his approval has dropped significantly among this group area after Trump took the Oath of Office.
Trump can regain the demographic. He just needs to let them know he wants them back. Somehow this president needs to match his messaging with his economic policies that are already truly pro-women. If he doesn’t and if the House flips, Trump could be in trouble.
