‘A new race of men’

I believe we are witnessing the beginning of a new race of men,” an anonymous British officer remarked after the 1777 Battle of Saratoga. This observation, made during the Revolutionary War and a full decade before the Constitution was written, was prescient. Indeed, Americans did become a different race of men — a unique race.
