Many on the Right consider Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas one of the wisest justices on the bench. Appointed by President George W. Bush and serving since 1991, Thomas is currently the longest-serving member of the high court. Last Friday, at an event hosted by former Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, Justice Thomas warned about the dangers of the current political climate in the country.
One of the issues Thomas discussed was court-packing. This has been suggested by many on the Left since President Donald Trump successfully nominated three justices to the bench. Thomas pointed out what everybody knows was the true intent behind the desire for this left-wing power grab.
“Let’s be honest. This is really about the results they want. They haven’t been able to make the institutions do what they want, to give them what they want. That’s no court at all. That’s no rule of law,” Thomas said.
Justice Thomas should be applauded for his courage to call packing the courts for what it is: an attempted left-wing power grab. It is imperative to point out that these ideas are grounded in the failure to “make the institutions do what they want.” Thomas’s words highlight the corruption behind such initiatives that cater to the power-obsessed, instant-gratification sentiment that dominates contemporary left-wing political thought.
He also noted that any discussion of court-packing ultimately does a great disservice to the country. It leads to the court losing its autonomy and credibility. Ultimately, it would lead to a complete loss of confidence in the judicial branch.
“You can cavalierly talk about packing or stacking the court. You can cavalierly talk about doing this or doing that,” Thomas said. “At some point, the institution is going to be compromised.”
Thomas also commented on the scourge that is cancel culture and its regressive effects on the country.
“I don’t know how we are going to survive as a society if we continue to exalt people who have bad manners, are insulting and negative. This is a civil society, and you need civility to make it work,” Thomas said.
He admonished the inability of students to debate civilly and chastised colleges for creating environments that reject dissenting opinions. He said today’s college campuses are “no fun” and full of people that “seem quite full of themselves” and foster hostility toward those that disagree with them.
“Where do you learn civility? Where do you learn to disagree without being disagreeable?” Thomas said of college campuses. “I don’t know where you’re going to learn to engage as we did when I grew up.”
Unfortunately, that is the objective for the leftists: They do not want dissenting viewpoints. It always has been. From the Soviet Union to the Great Cultural Revolution to 21st-century American college campuses, obedience to what the ruling class says is the primary goal. Hopefully, by speaking out against this phenomenon, Clarence Thomas can be a catalyst for change.
