As Mitt Romney gave his victory speech this evening, he promised to “save the soul of America,” which prompted a nasty tweet from Salon editor and MSNBC political analyst, Joan Walsh.
“Romney’s saving the soul of America – so he doesn’t have to baptize us after we’re dead,” she wrote cynically, mocking the Mormon practice of baptizing non-mormons after they have died.

This is the latest spiteful anti-Mormon comment from high profile liberal pundits since New York Times columnist Charles Blow told Mitt Romney to “stick it” up his “magic underwear,” referring to Mormons’ traditional undergarments.
11:45 Update: After initially trying to defend her remark on Twitter, Walsh apologized:
“Romney was the one who said he wanted to save our souls, just another apocalyptic, hysterical attack on the president,” she wrote, “However, I believe in keeping religion out of politics and I don’t want to be responsible for everything my Church preaches, so I apologize.”
