Occupy has lost Jon Stewart

Last night, The Daily Show ran a devastating package on the class divisions in Occupy Wall Street’s “new society.” “Let me get this straight, you’ve been here for eight weeks and you already have a ghetto?” Samantha Bee asked a “moocher class” occupier.

This was not the first time The Daily Show covered Occupy Wall Street. Bee filed an earlier piece on the occupiers troubled relationship with local merchants. But the tone in that story was almost maternal. She was mocking them, but also gently instructing them on how to modify their anti-social behavior.

This story is completely different. From the bike powered espresso machines, to the committee meetings held in the Deutsche Bank atrium, there is nothing but disdain in this clip.

Yesterday’s PPP poll was the first hard evidence that Occupy Wall Street has become a liability for the progressive movement. The Daily Show openly mocking them is another. This morning, OWS’s attempt to shut down Wall Street is dominating cable news. It appears they are failing.

The movement has become a joke.
