Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., demurred when asked if he would support his party against a third party candidacy, but he did say that a hypothetical third party candidacy by his father would fail, with the result that President Obama wins reelection.
“I think if the Tea Party split off, or if Ron Paul split off, it would be like Ross Perot when Ross Perot split off [which helped Bill Clinton win the presidency],” Rand Paul said on CNN. “It would just defeat the republican nominee, but it wouldnt necessarily elect the third party candidate.”
Rand Paul also said that Newt Gingrich should not be regarded as a Tea Party candidate. “Unfortunately, Newt Gingrich was right there with them being paid by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac,” he said. “It goes against everything that the tea party stands for.”
